Authorities say 18-year-old Johnny Strange of Malibu was photographed Wednesday by a bus passenger after climbing out of a BMW’s passenger window and standing on the car as it moved with traffic in a 50 mph zone.

Strange was later confronted by sheriff’s deputies in the halls of Malibu High School. Prosecutors are deciding what charges to file.

Strange made headlines last summer when he climbed Mt. Everest and then Australia’s Mt. Kosciuszko, becoming the youngest person to summit the highest peaks on all seven continents.

The 50-year-old man is from Belchertown. Officers checked his ID and discovered that, indeed, his legal name is Lord Jesus Christ. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor facial injuries.

Police say 20-year-old Brittany Cantarella was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

In the end, the device fizzled and the city and its residents counted themselves lucky once again: lucky that a vendor saw smoke creeping out of the car parked in one of the busiest streets in America; lucky that authorities responded quickly; and lucky that the would-be terrorists were clumsy enough to assemble a bomb that wasn’t capable of exploding.

But it was enough to fray nerves and set off a frenzied probe in what New York Police Department officials called the most serious car bomb plot in the city since the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, in which six people were killed and more than 1,000 injured.

“Clearly it was the intent of whoever did this to cause mayhem, to create casualties,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

The hunt was on Monday for a middle-aged man who was videotaped shedding his shirt near the sport utility vehicle where the bomb was found. Authorities also wanted to talk to the owner of the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder.

The gasoline-and-propane bomb could have cut the SUV in half, produced “a significant fireball” and sprayed shrapnel and metal parts with enough force to kill pedestrians and knock out windows on one of America’s busiest streets, lined with Broadway theaters and restaurants and full of people out on a Saturday night, Kelly said.

The Pakistani Taliban appeared to claim responsibility for the car bomb in three videos that surfaced after the weekend scare, monitoring groups said. Kelly said police have no evidence to support the claims and noted that the same group had falsely taken credit for previous attacks on U.S. soil.

Despite the attempt to instill fear, Times Square sprung back to life.

“This is America. This is what we do,” said Earl Morriss of Seattle, who was sightseeing. “Nobody is going to stop us from living our lives and doing what we want to do.”

The New York surveillance video, made public late Sunday, shows an unidentified white man apparently in his 40s slipping down an alley and taking off his shirt, revealing another underneath. In the same clip, he’s seen looking back in the direction of the smoking vehicle and furtively putting the first shirt in a bag. Police hoped to interview the tourist who took the video.

The NYPD and FBI also were examining “hundreds of hours” of security videotape from around Times Square, Kelly said.

Police had identified the registered owner of the dark-colored Pathfinder and were looking to interview him. The vehicle didn’t have an easily visible vehicle identification number and had license plates that came from a car found in a repair shop in Connecticut.

Police released a photograph of the SUV as it crossed an intersection at 6:28 p.m. Saturday. A vendor pointed out the SUV to an officer about two minutes later.

The explosive device in the SUV had cheap-looking alarm clocks connected to a 16-ounce can filled with fireworks, which were apparently intended to detonate the gas cans and set the propane afire in a chain reaction, Kelly said.

Investigators had feared that a final component placed in the cargo area — a metal rifle cabinet packed a fertilizer-like substance and rigged with wires and more fireworks — could have made the device even more devastating. Test results late Sunday showed it was indeed fertilizer, but NYPD bomb experts believe it was not a type volatile enough to explode like the ammonium nitrate grade fertilizer used in previous terror attacks, said police spokesman Paul Browne.

The exact amount of fertilizer was unknown. Police estimated the cabinet weighed 200 to 250 pounds when they pulled it from the vehicle.

Times Square, choked with taxis and people on one of the first summer-like days of the year, was shut down for 10 hours. Detectives took the stage at the end of some of Broadway shows to announce to theatergoers that they were looking for witnesses in a bombing attempt.

“No more New York,” said Crysta Salinas. The 28-year-old Houston woman was stuck waiting in a deli until 2 a.m. because part of a Marriott hotel was evacuated because of the bomb.

Agencies coordinating disaster relief for Mississippi’s tornado victims say two things are needed: cash donations and volunteers on standby.

“The victims don’t need stuff, not yet,” said Paige Roberts of the Southeast Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross. “The organizations that are here to provide them shelter, food and emotional support need money to meet those needs.”

Volunteer coordinators are encouraging those who want to help to register with the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service and wait for a call.

The Melrose Place actress was apparently ARRESTED on Saturday night around 4am after the mess drove her BMW onto a curb and over a No Parking sign in Westlake Village, CA!

She then proceeded to do the intelligent thing…and tried to flee the scene!

Authorities somehow linked her to everything, and upon arrival at her house saw that her vehicle’s damage matched that of the accident! Locklear was charged with a misdemeanor, cited, and then released.

What was she doing up driving around that late at night?? She’s lucky it was a parking sign and not a person!

We know that having your only bit of relevancy on the chopping block for cancellation must suck, but c’mon!

Paul Hutton, a former Royal Air Force aeronautical engineer who is studying electrical engineering, later admitted in court that he had been drinking. “I was very surprised to get done for drink-driving, but I was a twit to say the least,” he said.

He had added larger wheels to the toy car, which is designed for toddlers to scoot around the living room. “I’m in the third year of my electrical engineering course, and it was a little project I was doing with my son, who is doing a car mechanics course,” he said. “When it was done, I couldn’t resist the temptation to take it out.”

The Sun reports that Mr. Hutton said he was driving it to a friend’s house when he was pulled over. The police administered a breathalyzer test, which showed him to be over the legal limit.

“I’m not unhappy with my punishment, just a little bit surprised,” he said.

Because Mr. Hutton had been previously cited for drunken driving within the past 10 years, his license was revoked for three years, and he was ordered to pay $130 in court fees.

“This is most unusual,” said Magistrate Neil Munson. “I have never seen the like of it in 15 years on the bench.”

While it was not clear exactly which model Mr. Hutton was driving, Fisher Price builds a Barbie Jeep that runs off a rechargeable 12-volt battery and retails for $250.

“The vehicle is not even capable of doing the speed of a mobility scooter,” said Mr. Munson, “and could be outrun by a pedestrian.”

Before the incident was over, the man smashed his vehicle into at least four parked cars and, according to neighbors, tried to run them over and used a crow bar to smash a kitchen window. It ended when, in the process of hitting another car, his own vehicle tipped over, trapping him inside.

Battalion Chief Gerald Capaldi said the man, who was not immediately identified, was unconscious when rescuers arrived at the scene around 9:15 p.m. He said the man appeared to be the only one injured in the car smashing spree, which ended with his being transported to the trauma unit at Rhode Island Hospital.

Nicole Hopp, who lives at 159 Urban Ave., said she became aware when she moved into the neighborhood in January that there was a man living in half of the two-car garage next to her house. She said she did not know his name but that everyone referred to him as “Metal Mike.”

Wednesday afternoon, things began to get tense when “Mike” returned to the street and began racing his car up and down. Hopp said the man became upset because someone had cut the garage’s electricity and because her boyfriend, who has several cars, left a car with a flat tire in what he viewed as his spot in front of the garage.

She said he proceeded to ram his car into one of the cars belonging to her boyfriend, Ryan Fuller, and when people came out of the house to see what was going on he drove his car straight onto the lawn in an apparent attempt to run them over. “I thought he was going to ram the house,” she said.

Instead, she said, he pulled out a crowbar, using it to smash her kitchen window as well as her front door.

Then, she said, he got back into his car, using his vehicle to smash other cars belonging to her boyfriend, pushing one of the vehicles into the garage door and damaging a car inside In the process, the man’s own car tipped over.

Mayor Charles Lombardi, who was at the scene, said it was apparent that the man had set the garage up with all the comforts of home, and that he would asked the town’s building official to inspect the set-up to determine whether it was legal.
